Trust runs up £43m bill for agency nursing staff
MORE than £43m has been spent on employing agency staff at Southport and Ormskirk NHS Trust over the past five years.
The trust spent £43,375 on locum employees between 2013 and this year.
So far, in the first financial quarter of 2018/19, £2.14m has been spent on these staff.
The trust says it uses agency staff for a number of reasons, including cover for sickness and parental leave, cover for vacancies, and when hospitals are seeing more patients than would be normally expected.
The financial year 2015/16 was the most costly – with £10.7m spent on external staff.
Deputy director of nursing, Gill Murphy, said: “We always prefer employing our own staff where possible.
“Our next nurse recruitment event is November 24, between 11am and 3pm, in the Clinical Education Centre, at Southport hospital.
“It will be a great opportunity to chat informally to senior nurses about what the trust can offer. Interviews and potential offers of employment are available on the day.”
Online applications are encouraged, but there is no need to register to attend.
he trust has nursing vacancies throughout the organisation.
