POLICE and fire crews are investigating after a fire was started at the former Glenburn Sports College, in Skelmersdale.

Firefighters tackled a blaze which had reached the second floor of the building in the early hours of Thursday last week, and an arson investigation has been launched.

Crews from Skelmersdale, Ormskirk and Greater Manchester were called to what was initially believed to be a fire at an empty commercial building at about 4.30am and spent more than three hours extinguishing the fire.

A spokesman for the fire service said the fire was started on the ground floor, but spread to the second floor at one end of the building.

The college was closed in 2016 and, despite efforts to save the sports pitches for public use, has remained empty and has repeatedly been affected by vandalism and arson.

No-one was believed to have been injured in the latest incident.

A fire service spokesman said: “The fire is believed to have been started deliberately and as such a joint investigation alongside colleagues from Lancashire Constabulary is now under way.”
