In­ter­na­tional stud­ies gain re­search prize for prof

EDGE Hill Univer­sity’s Pro­fes­sor of Higher Ed­u­ca­tion, Ming Cheng, has re­ceived a pres­ti­gious NAFSA In­no­va­tive Re­search in In­ter­na­tional Ed­u­ca­tion Award.

The award cel­e­brates new and in­no­va­tive re­search that has made an im­pact in the field of in­ter­na­tional ed­u­ca­tion and is sup­ported by the Na­tional As­so­ci­a­tion of For­eign Stu­dent Ad­vis­ers’ (NAFSA) Teach­ing, Learn­ing, and Schol­ar­ship Knowl­edge Com­mu­nity.

Prof Cheng won the award for her re­search en­ti­tled Ex­plor­ing Chi­nese Stu­dents’ Ex­pe­ri­ence Of Cur­ricu­lum In­ter­na­tion­al­i­sa­tion A Com­par­a­tive Study Of Scot­land And Aus­tralia, which fea­tured in Stud­ies in Higher Ed­u­ca­tion, a world lead­ing jour­nal in higher ed­u­ca­tion stud­ies.

Her re­search ex­plored and com­pared how Scot­tish and Aus­tralian uni­ver­si­ties in­te­grated in­ter­na­tional and in­ter­cul­tural el­e­ments into their cur­ricu­lum to sup­port Chi­nese post­grad­u­ate taught stu­dents’ study.

Prof Cheng said: “I’m re­ally proud to have won the In­no­va­tive Re­search in In­ter­na­tional Ed­u­ca­tion Award.

“I hope my re­search will im­pact on the prac­tices of cur­ricu­lum in­ter­na­tion­al­i­sa­tion in the higher ed­u­ca­tion sec­tor.

“My re­search pro­poses that uni­ver­si­ties will need to bet­ter sup­port in­ter­na­tional stu­dents in order to im­prove their learn­ing and so­cial ex­pe­ri­ences and to de­velop their global per­spec­tives and cross-cul­tural ca­pa­bil­i­ties.”

In ad­di­tion to re­ceiv­ing an award, Prof Cheng will have the op­por­tu­nity to open the NAFSA Sym­po­sium on Re­search this au­tumn, she will be asked to chair a ses­sion on her re­search at the 2021 NAFSA An­nual Con­fer­ence and serve as an hon­ourable mem­ber of the 2021 Award Re­view Com­mit­tee.

With more than 10,000 mem­bers, the NAFSA is the world’s largest non­profit as­so­ci­a­tion ded­i­cated to in­ter­na­tional ed­u­ca­tion.

Ming Cheng has more than 14 years’ in­ter­na­tional ex­pe­ri­ence from work­ing at Bri­tish and Chi­nese uni­ver­si­ties.

Her re­search in­ter­ests cover cur­ricu­lum in­ter­na­tion­al­i­sa­tion, post­grad­u­ate learn­ing and su­per­vi­sion, in­ter­na­tional stu­dent ex­pe­ri­ences, and qual­ity eval­u­a­tion. This most re­cent award adds to her long his­tory of se­cur­ing nom­i­na­tions, awards and re­search grants.
