A crazed driver who mowed down a young couple has been jailed for six and a half years.

Shaun Inglis, 41, ploughed into Thomas Barber, 21, because he believed his victim had attacked him.

He also struck girlfriend Nicole Boyer, 23, and left her slumped and bleeding against a wall.

Inglis admitted attempting to murder the pair and was caged at the High Court in Edinburgh.

Judge Lord Boyd warned he could easily have been facing a rap for killing them.

He said: “It was a wicked act of revenge which might easily have resulted in the deaths of two people.”

Inglis deliberately drove his Ford Fiesta into Mr Barber and Ms Boyer on Mansfield Road, Lochwinnoch, last October 28.

The Linwood thug climbed through a broken windscreen and began hammering the man with a broken brick while yelling: “You’re a f*****g dead man.”

A maniac motorist who mounted a pavement and ploughed into a young couple was yesterday caged for six and a half years.

Shaun Inglis, 41, mowed down Thomas Barber, 21, just hours after the victim was cleared of battering him.

He also smashed into Nicole Boyer, 23, and a wall, then clambered through the broken windscreen and pummelled her boyfriend with a broken brick.

Inglis admitted attempting to murder the pair and was jailed at the High Court in Edinburgh.

Judge Lord Boyd told him he had shown no remorse and apparently believed Mr Barber deserved his fate.

He said: “It was a wicked act of revenge which might easily have resulted in the deaths of two people.

“Mr Barber was acquitted of assaulting you and you were apparently determined to take revenge and went looking for him.

“You deliberately drove your car across the street, mounting the pavement and striking both complainers.”

Mr Barber had been acquitted of attacking Inglis earlier in the day at Paisley Sheriff Court.

Inglis then went looking for him and deliberately drove his Ford Fiesta into the couple.

The thug leapt out and began attacking Mr Barber – who had been launched into a garden – with a brick, bit his left ear and bawled: “You’re a f***** g dead man.”

Ms Boyer was struck on her left side and fell to the ground against a wall.

Inglis then hobbled off on a broken foot.

The dad then phoned his social worker and told them: “I’ve done something. I’ve knocked him down and the car is on its roof.”

Prosecutor Duncan McPhie told how Inglis dialled 999 and confessed after the murder bid on Mansfield Road, Lochwinnoch, last October 28.

He said: “During the call he admitted he had run over the complainers and bashed in the male’s head.

“He also told police where he was.”

Mr Barber underwent surgery on his left hand after the attack and has been left with permanent scarring to his head and ear.

Defence lawyer Bob Mitchell insisted his the incident was out of character for his client and he posed no threat to the public.

He said: “He is a surprised to find himself in this position.

“Although he has previous convictions, they are not characterised by violence.

“This is very much an aberration in his general behaviour.”

Lord Boyd told Inglis, who lives in Linwood, he was lucky he had not killed the pair.

He warned he would have jailed him for at least a decade if he had not pled guilty and been convicted after a trial.
