Paisley music group hits a bum note
Opera Bamba cancel two concerts after members drop out
A troubled Paisley opera company has been hit by another blow.
Opera Bamba, which was founded in 2016 by Paisley student Mathew Oliver, has been forced to cancel its two upcoming performances because of difficulties with cast members.
Last year, what was to be its inaugural show – a performance of Puccini’s La boheme – was cancelled for the same reason.
Mr Oliver said: “A couple of people dropped out at the last minute and it was too late to replace them.
“After seven months of planning, it is hugely disappointing.”
Mr Oliver said the latest setback led him to consider closing Opera Bamba altogether.
“But we have done some concerts that have gone down well, so we’ll have to wait and see,” he added.
The company was founded with the aim of bringing opera to Paisley and the surrounding area, and hopes were high it would contribute to Paisley’s bid to become UK City of Culture 2021.
Opera Bamba was started to give emerging singers and production crew the chance to work in a professional environment and the opportunity to perform full-length operas on stage.
The company was hoping to develop and grow, particularly by encouraging the involvement of the next generation in opera and the performing arts in general, as well as outreach projects and collaboration with other local arts groups.
The two performances that have been cancelled are a concert of opera hits, due to take place this Saturday, and a staged performance of Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’amore, at the end of November, both at Holy Trinity & St Barnabas’ Church, in Paisley.
Opera has seen a resurgence in Paisley recently.
As well as Opera Bamba, new company Paisley Opera has come on the scene and will give a performance in Paisley Abbey in December of a show based on the infamous witch trials that the town experienced in the 17th century.
It will use witch-themed extracts from famous works to set the scene.
