Fam­i­lies are be­ing re­minded old £1 coins will no longer be ac­cepted at busi­nesses across Ren­frew­shire from Mon­day.

HM Trea­sury will ban the use of the round pound from mid­night.

They will still be able to be cashed in at banks, build­ing so­ci­eties and post of­fices.

The clas­sic de­sign is be­ing scrapped after the Royal Mint in­tro­duced a 12-sided re­place­ment in a bid to beat route out fakes

The im­proved de­sign was put into cir­cu­la­tion in March and is thin­ner, lighter and boasts ex­tra se­cu­rity fea­tures.

The round pound coin was in­tro­duced 30 years ago, with around £1.2bil­lion al­ready re­turned.
