More studying at uni
The number of people studying at university has increased by 10 per cent in a year, according to new statistics.
The latest figures released by the Higher Education Statistics Agenc y for 2016- 17 show that 15,955 students were enrolled at the University of the West of Scotland, whose biggest campus is based in Paisley.
And around 10 per cent of those at UWS were from overseas, showing the university remains a popular choice with international students.
There were 14,320 students from the UK, 580 from Europe Union member states and 1,055 from countries outside the EU.
Figures reveal the number of Scots studying at higher education centres increased by three per cent in a year to nearly 160,000, including a five per cent increase in postgraduate students.
Further and Higher Education Minister ShirleyAnne Somerville said: “More people than ever before are coming to study at Scottish universities, including students resident here whose numbers have increased by three per cent.
“It is a clear demonstration of the strength of Scotland’s reputation as a fantastic place to live, study, and work.
“In particular, these latest statistics show welcome signs that the study of education and science-based qualifications at university is increasing in popularity among students.
“It is one of our key priorities to encourage more people to enter these areas of the workforce, so it is good to see more students starting on this career path.”
