The goals will come

Danny doesn’t mind waiting as long as Saints are winning

- Craig Ritchie

On another day he could have had a few.

But Danny Mullen insists the search for his first St Mirren goal isn’t going to weigh heavily.

The former Livingston man was in the form of his life on Saturday, stepping up to the plate to grab a rare start by the scruff of the neck.

The nippy striker worked his socks off, running the Dunfermline defence in to the ground and earning the Buddies the penalty which opened the scoring.

Chances came and went for the 23-year-old, but his work-rate alone was enough to earn him the supporters’ man of the match award and a standing ovation when he was withdrawn late on.

And the striker admits that he was delighted to have impressed the fans – and hopefully his gaffer.

Mullen said: “Hopefully my first goal comes sooner rather than later but right now the three points are more important.

“As long as we can get the three points, that’s all I am focused on just now.

“It is a great win and all the fans were brilliant as well. It is another three points on the board and we are glad to see off a good side.

“It is great for the gaffer to put his belief in me at what is a vital part of the season.

“I am happy to play as many minutes as I possibly can to help the side. Hopefully I have helped the side at the weekend to the win and I’ve taken my opportunity when I am in the team. Now is a case of just trying to get as many minutes as possible between now and the end of the season.

“I think we controlled the game as soon as we got the goal. The second goal came straight after with a great strike from Liam.

“With a man advantage we just controlled the game to the very end which was great.”

St Mirren adopted a 4- 4- 2 formation for the clash with The Pars, with Mullen replacing the missing Lewis Morgan.

And the forward revealed he enjoyed joining Gavin Reilly on the front line.

He added: “It was good linkup with Gavin – I know the gaffer doesn’t normally play with two up front. But we got the chance on Saturday and I think we did well.”

The victory moved St Mirren 11 points clear at the top of the league with now just nine games to play.

Livingston and Dundee United both still have games in hand, with their ambitions again both halted in their tracks following postponements over the weekend.

Livi now look to be the Saints’ main rivals, and Mullen admits he is shocked to see his former side up near the top of the table.

He said: “When I left Livingston I didn’t think they would be the team chasing us. They are on a good run just now but we can’t worry about them – we need to stay focused.”
