STAB THREAT LOUT BEAT UP STRANGER

- Ron Moore

A trainee chef who battered a complete stranger and threw him down a set of stairs was spared jail despite also sparking a supermarket rammy.

Yob Jack Carson, 20, pounced on victim Paul Rodwell, who is in his 40s, as he waited for a train at Johnstone Rail Station.

The lout had been celebrating his birthday when he walked up to Mr Rodwell and snarled: “You are getting stabbed.”

He then punched the commuter so hard in the back he thought he was being knifed.

Paisley Sheriff Court heard that Carson, of Finch Place, Johnstone, came close to being thrown behind bars for his latest assault which took place at Asda at Paisley’s Phoenix

Retail Park.

Fiscal depute Tom Bowman said: “At around 4.25am staff at the shop had reason to approach Jack Carson.

“There was an exchange between Carson and staff members.

“He picked up a box of Capri Sun and kicked it towards the staff member.

“It struck him with such force the box broke and burst open.”

The fiscal added Carson fled on foot after the assault in Asda which took place on May 28 last year.

The staff member was left shaken but did not require hospital treatment.

Previously, Carson had been convicted of serious assault to injury following the platform horror, which took place on January 29, 2016.

The victim was targeted after drunken Carson and another male showed at the platform and began throwing chunks of bread at him.

He challenged them, but was immediately charged at and pummelled to the ground.

Mr Rodwell was then grabbed and tossed down a staircase headfirst, where he was laid into again.

The attack only stopped when Carson hopped on a train. The other male has never been traced. His victim managed to crawl to the ticket office covered in blood to seek help.

Defence agent Paul Lynch said: “Two complaints against him had been deferred. He also admits breaches of a previous order.

“He had been out. Drink had been consumed.

“He dropped in to Asda for provisions. He accepts what happened.

“He is not an infrequent visitor to this court and accepts his prospects of going to jail are increasing.

“He works as a trainee chef at the Coach House, in Bridge of Weir, and despite working full time manages to get himself into not considerable trouble.”

The lawyer urged the court to consider handing him a fine instead of custody.

Sheriff James Spy agreed with the solicitor and revoked a previous court order, handing Carson a two- year Community Payback Order requiring supervision, a £750 fine and
