High flats fire danger thanks to vandals
The lives of people who lived in a block of high flats in Paisley were put in danger – because of vandals.
This was revealed after a fire gutted the living room of a sixth-floor flat at Waverley Court, the SSHA multi-storey block in Foxbar.
Firemen tackling the blaze were delayed for what could have proved vital minutes if lives had been threatened, we reported in September 1979.
Vandals had knocked out essential firefighting equipment on the fifth floor.
The landings of the flats contained pipes that could be fed with water from a tender at ground level.
But when firemen connected a hose to the fifth floor outlet, water sprayed everywhere, except through the hose.
They had to disconnect the equipment and haul it up to the sixth floor before they could start to fight the fire.
