Flashback Higdon was either loved or loathed

-

Former St Mirren striker Michael Higdon was more renowned for finding the back of the net than he was for his tackling.

But the burly forward was always more than happy to dish it out if someone was getting lippy.

And Higdon reckoned he got the last laugh over his nemesis for the day that happened to be former Buddie Eddie Malone, during a 2-1 win over Ayr United in 2010.

Higdon and Malone were winding each other up during the first half of the cup clash – before Higdon was booked for a lunge on the former St Mirren left-back.

However, Higdon played down his spat with the United defender.

Higdon said: “He was mouthing off a little bit but it was nothing really.

“I said to him it wouldn’t be a fair fight and he shut up. Controversial

St Mirren FC is a club with a proud tradition — and a history to match.

They have been at the centre of the Scottish game since their formation in 1877.

Today, we look back at former striker Michael Higdon’s approach to the opposition.

“I was laughing at it as it was quite funny actually. There was a similar incident against Motherwell in the league and I got sent off because I was a bit rash. I was happy I never got sent off again.”

In the aftermath, Higdon became a hate figure among the home support.

He said: “Obviously their fans were getting impatient because their team weren’t playing that great, so it gave them something else to do – to moan at me!”

Higdon reflected on the result and performance.

He said: “Overall, I thought it was a good performance, especially in the first half.

“We withheld their pressure and deservedly won the game.

“It could have been four or five nil but the way we have been going this season we have not been that clinical and that’s why we are in the position we are in the league.”

In the aftermath, Saints boss Danny Lennon defended Higdon after the striker dodged a red card at Somerset Park.

Lennon said: “I certainly thought it was worthy of a yellow card – no more than that.”
