Police are hunting a danger driver who ploughed a car into a fence then ran off leaving an injured passenger behind.

The cowardly motorist legged it after smashing a VW Golf into a metal barrier at Stanely Road, Paisley, on Saturday morning.

Cops revealed the man made off despite his female passenger needing urgent medical help at around 9.20am.

The woman was rushed to the Royal Alexandra Hospital, where she remains.

Police taped off the crash site as they carried out a search of the scene.

The front of the dark coloured car was badly damaged with the bonnet crumpled and a wheel left buckled in the smash.

A major manhunt is now underway for the selfish motorist who fled the smash and cops probing the incident have appealed for public’s help in tracing him.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “We were called to reports of a one vehicle crash on Stanely Road, Paisley around 9.20am on Saturday, February 27.

“The driver ran off from the scene and enquiries are ongoing to trace him.”

She added: “The passenger was taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital, Paisley, where she is being treated for her injuries.

“Anyone who witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage from the Stanley Road area around that time is asked to contact Police Scotland via 101, quoting incident number 1092 of 27 February 2021.”

Stanely Road at Corsebar Drive was closed for several hours while specialist roads policing investigators pieced together the exact circumstances of what happened.

One officer was spotted placing a dashcam from the car into an evidence bag.

There were also reports that a Police Scotland helicopter was deployed to the area to join the search for the out-of-control driver.
