Thanks to the un­ex­pected ex­plo­sion of Dark Souls, From Soft­ware hasn’t had time to re­turn to the two se­ries that made its name: stompy mech-’em-up Ar­mored Core, and their pon­der­ous first-per­son RPG King’s Field. While the likes of

Hawken and MechWar­rior On­line have us cov­ered on the ro­bot front, it’s fallen to King’s Field fans to recre­ate its at­mo­spheric dun­geon­delv­ing. MasterTaf­fer has done just that with Heir of Granatyki, a pre­quel to the orig­i­nal game that prompts you to in­ves­ti­gate a mys­te­ri­ous dark­ness in the north­ern con­ti­nent. You’re not Columbo, so by “in­ves­ti­gate” I of course mean “slaugh­ter ev­ery mon­ster you come across”.

Made us­ing From’s mod­er­ately creaky Sword of Moon­light en­gine – a tool specif­i­cally tai­lored to mak­ing King’s Field- a-likes – Heir of

Granatyki is pretty far from your typ­i­cal FPS. WASD and mouse con­trols are out, and un­in­tu­itive key­board/gamepad com­mands are in. It’s worth putting up with all that, how­ever, as this ethe­real ad­ven­ture cap­tures the dream­like spirit of From’s orig­i­nals re­mark­ably well. DOWN­LOAD AT www.bit.ly/Granatyki
