You fight by swing­ing your mouse around to gen­er­ate mo­men­tum, with the amount of dam­age de­pend­ing on how heav­ily you’re able to con­nect to the en­emy that you’re at­tempt­ing to smash. The dis­con­nect be­tween Ham­mer­fight’s sto­ry­telling and the ma­nia of its com­bat is so pro­nounced that it con­sti­tutes a fea­ture in its own right, a rare op­por­tu­nity to see what it may be like if fight­ing in Lord of the Rings was re­placed with events from Gla­di­a­tors.
