PW’s Colette finds out if France’s capital lives up to it’s romantic reputation
ENJOYING A GLASS OF WINE AND EACH OTHER’S COMPANY IS THE NORM
The mere mention of the word ‘Paris’ fills me with romantic visions of the Eiffel Tower, macarons, balconies, wine and strolling next to the Seine. In reality? It’s all of this and so much more…
Our home for the weekend was Hotel La Lanterne – a chic boutique hotel hidden away down a side street in the très luxurious Latin Quarter. The hotel is big enough to house a gorgeous spa area, but small and intimate enough that your time spent there feels very personal. With a range of different rooms, the hotel can accommodate a variety of budgets – but there’s no denying that the topfloor suites, with balconies boasting views of the city, are the best.
Our mornings were spent relaxing in the underground pool and Turkish bath, before enjoying a leisurely breakfast (croissants – what else?!). Once we’d reached a top-peak of relaxation, it was time to start exploring the capital.
The location is prime. With amazing attractions such as the Notre Dame and Hotel de Ville within walking distance, simply roaming the streets was activity enough.
One of the best parts of the trip was dinner at the incredible Alcazar restaurant on the Rive Gauche. The menu is resolutely French, with an atmosohere to match. Chic and glamorous, this is a must-visit for a romantic meal in true Parisian fashion. Although we spent most of our time exploring, by the end of the trip we didn’t feel in need of another, more relaxed holiday, which is so often the case with a city break. The laid-back vibe the locals are so known for reflects in the city’s culture; enjoying an al fresco glass of wine watching the world go by and enjoying each other’s company is the norm and so encouraged! The ‘city of love’ is truly the perfect post-wedding getaway spot to fully immerse yourselves in your new marriage.
