LAURA MADDISON AND LUKE AVIS-RIORDAN HELD THEIR WOODLAND WEDDING AT EVER AFTER, DARTMOOR, ON 23RD JULY 2016

Luke and I fell in love with our venue, Ever After, the first time we saw it. We were looking for somewhere close to our home in Plymouth with an enchanted fairytale feel. After seeing the flower-filled gardens, the barns and backdrop of the woodland, river and moss-covered trees, we knew it was exactly what we were looking for. The bridal cottage also won us over. Beautifully decorated, it was the perfect place to get ready with my bridesmaids on the morning with its fulllength ornate and Hollywood-lit mirrors.

I wanted our flowers to look natural and hand-picked, while Luke was keen to incorporate a few pops of red into our enchanted woodland theme. I did some Pinterest research to explain my vision to our florist, but Deborah from Dartmoor Flowers knew exactly what I wanted and perfectly captured the wildflower look.

We named our tables after famous pairings such as Batman and Robin, Romeo and Juliet, and Ross and Rachel, all beautifully illustrated by our wedding

stationer, Emmy Designs. I trawled my favourite antique shops up north (where I’m from) for glass bottles and old books for our table centrepieces, and painted jars with guests’ names for them to fill with Pimm’s and cloudy lemonade while mingling in the grounds.

Our favours were Uncle Joe’s Mintballs, a traditional favourite from my home town of Wigan, along with freshly-made Devon fudge to celebrate Luke’s family coming from Plymouth.

There were so many memorable moments throughout the day – one of the funniest was when the Fifties-style Cadillac that we hired as a nod to Cuba, where we got engaged, very nearly broke down on the way to the church. My dad and I narrowly avoided running down the hill to the church!

Despite the journey, I was actually quite calm when it came to walking down the aisle. After holding in tears all day, the speeches by Luke and my dad were what broke me! I could see what they were about to say in their notes on the table, which set me off instantly!
