“I’VE OWNED THIS R1 for 11 years and have built it up over this pe­riod. It started life as a red 1999 R1 and there’s not one piece that’s stan­dard, apart from the 5JJ mo­tor, which isn’t even the orig­i­nal mo­tor.

“The bike it­self has Öh­lins sus­pen­sion, Robby Moto yokes, Dy­mag wheels, R7 Brak­ing 320mm discs, Brembo M4 calipers, an Öh­lins steer­ing damper, Gilles rearsets, Akrapovic ti­ta­nium man­i­folds, a Rac­e­fit Growler ex­haust, and a braced swingarm.

“I’ve also chopped the sub­frame and had it welded to make it shorter but I’ve done it so I can still use my un­der­seat stor­age. I’ve short­ened the front end, too, as well as low­er­ing the fair­ing.

“I’ve also cut out and ma­chined the rear brake caliper bracket – I made a cus­tom un­der­tray, car­ry­ing an LED ZX-6R rear light with in­di­ca­tors built in to keep it look­ing smooth.

“I use this bike all year round – it even goes out in the ice. The bike used to have ni­trous ox­ide fit­ted to it but find­ing ni­trous is hard on the south coast of Eng­land so I’ve re­moved it. The bike’s my pride and joy and I hope its wor­thy of your mag­a­zine.”

It’s taken Si­mon 11 years to get it to this point
