‘Finding nitrous for it was difficult...’
YAMAHA YZF-R1 SIMON ALPIN
“I’VE OWNED THIS R1 for 11 years and have built it up over this period. It started life as a red 1999 R1 and there’s not one piece that’s standard, apart from the 5JJ motor, which isn’t even the original motor.
“The bike itself has Öhlins suspension, Robby Moto yokes, Dymag wheels, R7 Braking 320mm discs, Brembo M4 calipers, an Öhlins steering damper, Gilles rearsets, Akrapovic titanium manifolds, a Racefit Growler exhaust, and a braced swingarm.
“I’ve also chopped the subframe and had it welded to make it shorter but I’ve done it so I can still use my underseat storage. I’ve shortened the front end, too, as well as lowering the fairing.
“I’ve also cut out and machined the rear brake caliper bracket – I made a custom undertray, carrying an LED ZX-6R rear light with indicators built in to keep it looking smooth.
“I use this bike all year round – it even goes out in the ice. The bike used to have nitrous oxide fitted to it but finding nitrous is hard on the south coast of England so I’ve removed it. The bike’s my pride and joy and I hope its worthy of your magazine.”
It’s taken Simon 11 years to get it to this point
