MOTEC M170 ECUs are manda­tory in BSB. The con­trol sys­tem doesn’t in­clude rider aids, but fu­elling and ig­ni­tion set-up are free. “The prob­lem with the Fire­blade be­ing older is the con­ven­tional throt­tle – we have less abil­ity to con­trol power than with fly-by-wire. A lot of the de­vel­op­ment we do is to con­trol wheel­ies on cor­ner exit. We can pro­gram each cylin­der’s pair of in­jec­tors in­de­pen­dently, but fly-by-wire will al­low us much more throt­tle man­age­ment. At the mo­ment we have to re­duce power and torque if the bike is hav­ing prob­lems get­ting out of cor­ners, where other teams can just change the throt­tle set­tings.”
