The original chimney flues in our home are currently redundant but we may decide to use them in the future – should we temporarily close them off?
It’s advisable to reduce air leakage from the interior of the house through the redundant flues as these can cool down rooms if left. You must also ensure that the disused flues have ventilation, to reduce the risk of condensation, which can cause dampness and deterioration on internal walls. In the short-term, an inflatable chimney balloon, chimney umbrella or wool draught excluder can be inserted. You can also close the damper, if present.
