Church news The joint service in Dunning Church on Sunday at 11am will be led by the Rev James Aitchison. Tea and coffee will be served after the service and all are most welcome. The church will again host a chocolate tombola at the Dunning fayre this Saturday, June 3, all donations of anything with a ‘chocolate’ theme should be handed it to Pauline or Susan.

Almondbank

St Serf’s Church The service on Sunday of last week was conducted by Mr Michael Archibald and his sermon was based on ‘Glorificat­ion and the future’. The scripture readings were read by Carol Duff, the organist was Alison Hooper and the flowers were kindly gifted by Muriel McIntosh. There will be a joint session meeting with the vacancy procedures committee on Wednesday, May 31, at 7.30pm. As from Sunday, June 4, the services in St Serf’s Church will begin at 11.30am. There will be a joint service at Almondbank Church this Sunday, May 28, beginning at 10am, followed by the Christian Aid soup lunch. Tickets cost £3 and are available from Carol or Isobel, or can be paid on the day. Everyone is welcome.

Alyth

Alyth Church Morning worship on Sunday of last week was conducted by Rev Mike Erskine in Alyth Parish Church. The service on Sunday of this week begins at 11am. A coffee morning will be held in Airlie Street Hall this Saturday, May 27, from 10am to noon, to raise funds for the hall. During term-time the Sunday school welcomes children to the front pews of the church each Sunday morning. A creche for under-threes is available during every Sunday morning service. The prayer group meets in Burnside Court lounge on Thursdays at 10.30am. Choir rehearsal meets every Friday at 6.45pm, new members are welcome. The church website at www.alythparis­hchurch.org.uk is updated weekly. Family history project Alyth Family History Project is open at Alyth Parish Church on Sundays from 2pm to 4pm. The archive includes thousands of photograph­s of people, events, schools, businesses, weddings, children and views, etc. Admission is free. Balbeggie

Charity sale An animal welfare sale in aid of cats and other animals in need will take place in St Martin’s Public Hall, Balbeggie, from 10am to 4pm on Friday, June 2, and 10am to noon the following day. Stalls include bric-a-brac, good as new, books, CDs, toys, jewellery and plants. There will also be a Brownies’ stall, tombola, a raffle and refreshmen­ts. All welcome. Bowing Club The ‘Brig’ played host to the Scottish Bowlers Fellowship on Sunday, but due to bad weather, the game had to be abandoned and it was agreed the result would be a draw. The members were saddened pictured are Allan Gibb, club president, and members of the committee. to hear of the death of long-term member Bob Simpson at the weekend. He was very active until the last few years when bad health forced him to give up playing, but he always came to watch games being played. The funeral will take place at Perth Crematoriu­m on Monday, May 29 at 3pm. All are invited to the Queen’s Hotel afterwards for tea. The committee and members extend their condolence­s and sympathy to his wife Evelyn and their family. Well done to Lewis Nicol for reaching the semi-final of District 6 junior singles, and to Dorothy Nelson, Anne McConnachi­e and May Rattray, the ladies triples who are playing in the semi-finals on Sunday, May 28 at 2pm. The senior fours also won their game and will play the final at West End green on June 4 at 10.30am. Well done to Mary McLaren, Rena Smith, Meryl McKenzie and Irene Bettaney. The club triples will take place on Sunday, and members should be at the club by 12 noon. Donations of food and raffle prizes would be appreciate­d. Abbey Church The service on Sunday of last week was conducted by Rev Robert Sloan. The choir’s introit reminded those gathered that ‘God is good’. Bible readings, read by Jeff Brewer, were from Peter chapter three, verses 13 to 22 and John chapter 14, verses 15-21. Afterwards, Mr Sloan demonstrat­ed that he still had much to learn as a mind-reader as he told the congregati­on that Jesus had understood the unspoken fears and confusion of his disciples when he informed them that he was leaving them. Jesus promised that they would never be on their own, and that he would receive a new helper, and “the spirit of truth”, who would stay with them forever. This promise was not

West Carse community council The AGM and public meeting of West Carse community council will be held in the West Carse Public Hall, Glencarse next Wednesday, May 31 at 7.30pm. Alasdair Bailey will talk on efforts to bring superfast Broadband to the Carse of Gowrie area. This presentati­on will include a question and answer session where residents will be able to voice their concerns and experience­s. All members of the public are invited and welcome to attend. Refreshmen­ts will be served at the close of the meeting.
