Counter changes result in loss of job
Perth’s Tesco Metro on South Street is soon to lose the cheese and meat deli counter. The move follows the store’s bakery section going self-service.
Regarding the demise of the manned deli counter, the supermarket chain is making similar changes to smaller Metro stores all over the country, blaming a slump in demand.
Products from the cold counter would now, where possible, be found pre-packed in other parts of the shop.
The PA understands that one staff member at South Street has been made redundant and another moved within the store as a result of the changes.
A Tesco spokesperson said:“Across the UK we’re making some changes in a number of our stores, including Perth, to help us run them more simply and deliver the best possible service for customers.
“Where there have been changes to a colleague’s role we have worked with them to ensure they are fully supported.”
He explained that while the cheese and meat part of the counter would cease, a bigger range of hot meat products will be moving to the front of store.
