Abbey Church Sunday’s service was conducted by Rev Andy Graham. The choir returned from their summer break and sang the introit ‘The Lord’s My Shepherd’. After opening prayers the bible readings, Deuteronomy ch 4 v 1-9 and Matthew ch 7 v 1-6 and 13-23 were read by Irene Henderson. At this time of year many students are leaving home for the first time to go to university or college. Recalling his own teenage years Rev Graham remembered his own father giving him advice: “Remember who you are, where you come from and be true to yourself.” This was in essence what God was saying to the Israelites in the first reading. He was commanding obedience to the laws which He had taught them but also asking them to teach them to their children. We must remember that we are disciples of Jesus and we are commanded to pass on our faith and heritage and take others with us on our journey to God. Society has changed and we must change the way we do this. Our children’s groups which run on Thursdays are a good example. Musical offerings by organist Austin Wilkie included chorale prelude in F Major by Healy Willan, Gagliarda by Jean de Macque and Toccata and Fugue in D Minor by JS Bach.
