Green vests set off Around Cum­brae

Per­sonal best times were the or­der of the day for Perth Road Run­ners who made the jour­ney to com­pete in the Around Cum­brae 10-mile race.

Twenty seven green vests made the trip west, jumped on the ferry from Largs, be­fore be­ing met with grim con­di­tions at the start line.

But that did not de­ter Michael Mc­Connell from fin­ish­ing in ninth po­si­tion over­all in 57:22 as Stu­art Robert­son fol­lowed in be­hind in 57:51 for 11th over­all. Kevin Rid­dell was third Perth mem­ber back in 62:18.

Caro­line Jones was first fe­male road run­ner in 70:58 with Son­jia Crow in 73:08 and Gil­lian Ed­wards clock­ing 75:57. Sev­eral club mem­bers gained new per­sonal best times in­clud­ing Garry Smith in 68:04, Brian Gal­letly in 70:09 and Stephane Reid with a time of 91:23.

On the same day, eight road run­ners trav­elled south to New­cas­tle for the Great North Run. Richard Ward fin­ished the half-marathon in a new per­sonal best time of 1:27:58. It was his ninth ap­pear­ance at the event in the last 10 years and he re­turned home with 67th

Lisa Aik­man was first fe­male green with Robin Wom­bill and Fiona vest in 1:45:23 with Ch­eryl Ga­han Mor­ri­son fin­ish­ing the pic­turesque out re­turn­ing shortly af­ter in 1:51:47. Colin and back route in 2:52:07 and 2:52:08 Wil­cox fin­ished in 1:45:42, Stu­art Cairns re­spec­tively. in 1:45:24 and An­drew Gel­latly 2:49:11. Closer to home, six green vests lined Wendy and Lenny Bur­nett fin­ished up for the Stirling 10K. Myles Bax was to­gether in a time of 2:00:46. first male road run­ner home and 39th over­all in 33:28.

Si­mon Grieshaber fin­ished in 41:42, com­ing 25th in his age cat­e­gory, fol­lowed closely by James Fother­ing­ham in 41:48. Angela Irv­ing was first fe­male from Perth in 42:28, ahead of Sue Jones in 49:47 and Ka­t­rina Leese, who ran her first 10k race in club colours with a new per­sonal best time of 57:39.

It was an­other busy week­end at the Perth Parkrun where 30 green vests lined up along­side over 200 par­tic­i­pants. David Knight fin­ished third over­all in 17:46 with Mar­lena Nowaczyk third fe­male over­all in 21:43.

Fi­nally, four in­trepid road run­ners took part in the Tiree multi-ter­rain ul­tra-marathon.

In atro­cious weather con­di­tions and ar­guably an even tougher route than pre­vi­ous years, Andy Wil­son fin­ished the 35-mile test in a new per­sonal best time of 6:57:10. Lau­rie Car­ruthers fin­ished in 7:02:55, with Mar­garet McIn­tosh in 9:38:09 and Caro­line Ness in 10:16:22.

The fi­nale of the sum­mer se­ries is this Sun­day with the Pit­lochry 10K.

And the next club cham­pi­onship race is the East Neuk 10K on Septem­ber 24.
