Pick Me Up! Special

Should I tell him?

I’ve just found out that I’m pregnant and there’s a small chance that the baby isn’t my boyfriend’s. I had a one night stand with a man from my past – it was stupid and I massively regretted it straight away. I wanted to put it behind me but then I missed my period. My boyfriend would make an amazing father and I know that he’s the one I want. The one night stand was a mistake and I know he wouldn’t want anything to do with the baby. I keep telling myself the baby is probably my boyfriend’s anyway – so why ruin it all? We could be a perfect family so shall I just keep quiet?

YES Pick Me Up! reader Michelle from Poole says:

What good would it do to tell him? If you are sure this man from your past wouldn’t want anything to do with the baby, then leave him out of it. You have a chance for a happy family, so don’t ruin it by breaking your boyfriend’s heart. Keep your mistakes in the past where they belong.

NO Pick Me Up! reader Julie from Winchester says:

Your boyfriend deserves to know the truth, and the sooner the better! I’m sure he will be upset, but if you assure him this was a one-time thing and that you want a future with him, in time I’m sure he will accept it and be willing to work things out. He is bound to find out anyway, so it’s better that the truth comes from you. Expert Jo says: I’ve experienced something eerily similar in my own childhood and one thing I do know is that family secrets always come out (in my case when I was 40!) Please, please don’t keep this to yourself because you’ll cause a whole heap of pain, confusion and resentment in the long run. Your child needs to know who their father is because growing up thinking one man is your daddy only to discover he’s not is utterly devastating. Not to mention lying to your partner and the emotional toll all this will have on you carrying this awful secret around. Tell your boyfriend, explain it was a mistake, have your baby, get a DNA test and live with whatever the truth is. The truth is always better
