An es­ti­mated half a mil­lion build­ings in the UK still con­tain as­bestos – sil­i­cate min­er­als once com­monly used for in­su­la­tion. If dis­turbed, as­bestos can cause a range of se­ri­ous health prob­lems, par­tic­u­larly in the lungs, due to the in­hala­tion of mi­cro­scopic as­bestos fi­bres. In 2015, there were 2,542 deaths due to mesothe­lioma.
