I won­der if any­one in the fly­ing fra­ter­nity has con­sid­ered the wider im­pli­ca­tions of the re­cent an­nounce­ment re­gard­ing mov­ing to elec­tric ve­hi­cles by 2040. As both petrol and diesel-pow­ered cars through­out Europe will dis­ap­pear over the next twenty years, so will their enor­mous

thirst for the chem­i­cals that fuel them. If cars no longer re­quire them, will the com­pa­nies that cur­rently make these fu­els con­tinue mak­ing the smaller batches that light air­craft use? Diesel en­gines pow­ered by jet fuel were de­vel­oped ten years ago; will these and all-elec­tric pow­er­plants re­place the cur­rent en­gines? Simon Clarke by email
