I’m a non-pilot, classic and performance car enthusiast with a general interest in aeroplanes. I read car magazines intensely but occasionally, when flying on business trips, I pick up a plane magazine to read on the flight.
On a recent trip I picked up a copy of Pilot, which I had not read before. Reading Pat Malone’s column ‘The Ascent of Man’, I found it to be one of the most inspiring pieces I have ever read in a magazine. I wrote to a classic car magazine recently to give the view that the hobby is in better shape than ever and to offer an alternative to the continual moaning and doom. Our hobby, classic cars, has nowhere near the amount of regulation as flying, in fact we have seen a reduction in regulation and a lot of support from government in recent years, and yet the magazines still forecast incredible doom.
I think our hobby can take a good lesson from Pat. Take stock of how far we’ve come and look at the huge advantages progress has given us. Then extrapolate the line, the world just gets better and better. Thanks Pat, you’re an inspiration. Clayton Sampson, Little Horwood
