A new ‘Ex­per­i­men­tal’ from Scaled Com­pos­ites

On 11 Oc­to­ber Northrop Grum­man sub­sidiary Scaled Com­pos­ites Inc an­nounced the first flight of one of two pro­to­types of a new ex­per­i­men­tal air­craft, the Model 401. Lit­tle has been re­vealed of the air­craft’s pur­pose other than that it has been de­vel­oped for an undis­closed customer ‘to demon­strate ad­vanced, low-cost man­u­fac­tur­ing tech­niques and to pro­vide air­craft for re­search flight ser­vices to in­dus­try part­ners and the United States gov­ern­ment’. The Model 401s have a 38ft wing­span, an empty weight of 4,000lb and are pow­ered by a sin­gle Pratt & Whit­ney JTD15D-5D en­gine. Max­i­mum speed is Mach 0.6, en­durance up to three hours.
