A new ‘Experimental’ from Scaled Composites
On 11 October Northrop Grumman subsidiary Scaled Composites Inc announced the first flight of one of two prototypes of a new experimental aircraft, the Model 401. Little has been revealed of the aircraft’s purpose other than that it has been developed for an undisclosed customer ‘to demonstrate advanced, low-cost manufacturing techniques and to provide aircraft for research flight services to industry partners and the United States government’. The Model 401s have a 38ft wingspan, an empty weight of 4,000lb and are powered by a single Pratt & Whitney JTD15D-5D engine. Maximum speed is Mach 0.6, endurance up to three hours.
