MH434 Marches to the top

Pilot - - OLD TIMERS -

It was Spitfire IX MH434’S turn to win the Freddie March Spirit of Aviation concours d’elegance at the Goodwood Revival, held on 7-9 September. This year, the meeting’s aviation element celebrated RAF100. It was therefore apposite that former RAF types swept the board, with ARC’S newly flown Lysander IIIA V9312 (see October Old Timers) and hangar-mate Blenheim (Duxford) Ltd’s Blenheim IF L6739 coming in second and third places.

2018 has been a year of multiple anniversaries for MH434. Its 75th ‘birthday’ was celebrated at IWM Duxford on 7 August with a gathering of former and current pilots, engineers and owners. Its Goodwood win occurred twenty years after the Spitfire’s memorable appearance at the first Revival, during which Ray Hanna flew it, low and fast, along the racing circuit’s opening straight, creating a classic (and never to be repeated) event image.
