Few names within the menswear industry have delivered as many words of wisdom as Hardy Amies. In addition to the quote below, he’s also expressed that “it is totally impossible to be well-dressed in cheap shoes” and that “to achieve the nonchalance which is absolutely necessary for a man, one article at least must not match”. Perhaps his ability to articulate himself can be attributed to his childhood journalistic ambitions. It was thanks to his way with words that secured him his first job at Mayfair couture house Lachasse by, in glowing terms, explaining the beauty of a dress to one of its seamstresses. He became Managing Director of the label in 1934 and over a decade later he launched his own bespoke tailoring service in London at 14 Savile Row. Amies died in 2003, aged 93, but Hardy Amies tailors is still serving clients at the same address to this day.
