Munster restaurant damaged in blaze
A longtime Munster pizzeria will be out of commission for an indeterminate amount of time after a fire burned the front of its building, a fire official said.
Munster fire Chief Dave Pelc said Thursday a passerby reported smoke coming from the roof at Aurelio’s Pizzeria, 416 Ridge Road, at 8:24 a.m. Thursday. When firefighters arrived, they found a small fire behind the sign.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the fire was caused by “an electrical issue,” Pelc said.
The fire caused damage to the outside of the building, and there was water and smoke damage inside, Pelc said, adding he thinks the building will likely be closed for some time. No one was in the building at the time, he said.
The Lansing, Highland and Schererville fire departments assisted with the fire, Pelc said.
