Riding turn knot withstanding

Practical Boat Owner - - Letters - Martin Bradshaw By email

Re ‘Dealing with a riding turn’ (Sketchbook, PBO August), there is a more reliable method. ‘A rolling hitch is fine, but don’t worry about the correct knot’ is insufficient advice. With a bar-taut synthetic rope, a rolling hitch will not hold – however many extra turns are added. Only a climber’s knot will get you out of trouble: the Klemheist knot. The illustration above is from Reed’s Skipper’s Handbook.
