Round Britain & Ireland in 1970

Practical Boat Owner - - Letters - Colin Rose Rhiwbina, Cardiff

I noted with interest Andrew Simpson’s mention in his July article of his entry in the 1970 Round Britain and Ireland Race. According to the Amateur Yacht Research Society (AYRS) publication 75, my boat Ishkoodah a Trapper 28, also competed and came 12th overall, two places behind Three Fingered Jack.

I make no personal claims for glory though – I purchased Ishkoodah in 1987 and never knew the original owner, Mark Simmonds. She still has an active racing life, competing round the cans in the Bristol Channel nearly every Sunday from Cardiff Bay Yacht Club.

I wonder how many of the boats from that 1970 race are still around?
