Be your own surveyor

Practical Boat Owner - - Letters - Tony Thompson Montreal, Canada

I was shocked see in PBO’s April 2018 View from the Boatyard article the appalling state of seaworthiness of the Southerly being repaired.

It appears this boat had not had a recent survey, which I find strange as this would normally be a requirement to get boat insurance, at least it would be here in Canada.

In his book Inspecting the Aging Sailboat author Don Casey includes a section called Boat-Buyer’s 30 Minute Survey – following the tips in it would certainly have picked up quite a few of the Southerly’s deficiencies. Maybe reading such an article before buying a boat would avoid a disaster and major expenses later.

A lot of rot was found in this Southerly when boatbuilders started making another repair
