Jail for bogus boat theft fraudster
A boat owner who made a fraudulent insurance claim for a ‘stolen’ Cranchi Star 21 has been handed a six month prison sentence.
Kieran Andrew Kearney, 33, of Ffordd y Blaenau, Treuddyn, in north Wales, insured his boat with Navigators & General for £13,000. He then reported it stolen to the police and contacted his insurers.
The firm’s investigators became suspicious and the boat was found at the home of his former partner.
Kearney pleaded guilty to two counts of fraud for falsely claiming the Cranchi Star 21 had been stolen and for hiding his previous convictions when taking out the policy.
The boat was seized under the Proceeds of Crime Act.
