7 Waterclose Meadows Campsite
You can’t pitch much closer to the historic Houghton Mill than at Waterclose Meadows, a campsite run by the National Trust. Visitors can make the most of time spent on this peaceful site, which offers views over the Ouse Valley and plenty of space, so you won’t feel hemmed in by other units. While you’re here, make sure you visit the 18th-century watermill itself, which is still working – you can learn all about milling flour and even give it a go yourself. The pitches all have electric hook-ups, and are all grass. The toilet block has disabled facilities, a chemical disposal point, laundry machines and fresh water. The site also has a handy small shop for essentials. And if you feel like having an afternoon treat, you can pop across to the National Trust tea room for a cup of tea and a slice of cake. The location of the site is ideal – not only for the watermill, but also for the nearby villages of Houghton and Wyton, where there are cosy pubs and a village shop. While you are visiting these picturesque villages, make sure to take a stroll around so you can enjoy the traditional thatched cottages and pretty gardens. When you book your stay on this site, you can request a pitch close to the riverside, which will be even more relaxing.
