CONISTON ROUND // Lake District

-

I fondly remember childhood weekends spent walking all over the UK, but few stand out in my mind quite as much as the first time that our family travelled to the Lake District, to hike along the Coniston Round.

This was a walk that sparked my lifelong love of the outdoors and the thrill of standing on top of a peak and feeling the wind on your face as your eyes feast on the landscape stretching for miles in every direction.

There are various options for your route, ranging from six to 14 miles, with the longer ones taking in several Wainwrights and Hewitts, and all of them include the Old Man of Coniston.

Set in such beautiful and striking landscapes, it’s easy to see why so many people regard this as one of the all-time great Lake District walks.

CLEEVE HILL COMMON // Cotswolds

For those who might prefer a gentler stroll, with stately homes to admire and afternoon tea to enjoy, there is no better place to walk than the

Cotswolds. Home to quaint honey-coloured houses, rolling green hills and peaceful valleys, the region is blessed with many excellent trails, from that gentle stroll to something more strenuous.

However, it’s quite hard to look beyond this beautiful walk, which crosses the region’s highest common and offers spectacular views across to Wales and Malvern when the weather allows.

Mixing landscapes of ancient forest and limestone grassland, this is a gem for walkers of all abilities. And there’s also something to be said for simply pottering around any of the picture-book villages for which the Cotswolds are rightly famous.

LOCH AN EILEIN CIRCULAR WALK // Scottish Highlands

You could spend months on end walking in Scotland and you still wouldn’t have seen half of what this beautiful countryside has to offer.

I will always love the challenge of the mountains, but this route is more of a family-friendly stroll, taking you along the banks of Loch an Eilein. Sheltered by
