Diagnosing and changing a faulty coil pack is quick and simple. There’s no need to be put off by the apparent complexity of modern engine management systems, they actually make life easier than trouble shooting on traditional carb and distributor engines. We’ll show you how to sort out this problem on a BMW 3 Series, though the same approach will work for many other classics from the Nineties onwards. First we’ll use the ‘On Board Diagnostics’ or OBD system and a code reader to find the fault, then get stuck in to replacement.
