PART 1 START

1 Core plugs

There are several core plugs used to seal the block. Fit the final one at the front, near the camshaft bearing. Smear the edges of the plug with sealant and hammer it home using a suitably sized socket.

2 Preparing the timing cover

The timing chain has a spring blade tensioner fitted inside the timing cover. Oil the new tensioner then fit to the inside of the cover with its pivot pin, which is secured by washers and split pins at either end.

3 Timing cover oil seal

Ensure the recess for the timing cover seal is clean, apply a light film of oil and press the seal into place with thumb pressure, keeping it true to the cover. If necessary, tap it fully home with a wooden block.

4 In goes the camshaft

Properly lubricating the cam during assembly is critical to protect it during the engine’s first start up, and for its ultimate longevity. Follow the supplier’s instructions or use a good quality assembly lube.

5 Fitting the camshaft

Carefully slide the camshaft into its bearings in the block. The cam bearings are soft, so keep the camshaft exactly parallel and avoid snagging the journals, lobes or distributor drive gear.

6 Front plate gasket

There are dowels and studs in the front face of the block to locate the timing cover. Use sealant to fit the top stud that protrudes into the water jacket. Apply sealant and locate the front plate gasket.

7 Fitting the front plate

Apply more sealant to the front of the gasket then offer up the front plate. Press the plate firmly into place to bed down the sealant then fit the set screws at the lower corners and just above the crankshaft.

8 Camshaft keeper plate

Bolt up the camshaft keeper plate, then check the cam rotates easily. If it’s tight, relieve the keeper plate slightly by rubbing on a flat oilstone. The maximum allowable camshaft end float is 8.5 thou.

9 Timing chain sprocket

Trial fit the camshaft sprocket and confirm that the cam turns without resistance. Ensure the camshaft sprocket is aligned with the sprocket on the crankshaft nose.
