Scientific name: Notropis chrosomus (No-trop-iss crow-so-muss). Size: To around 8cm fully grown, usually 5-6cm in tanks. Origin: North America, in the states of Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee. Habitat: Clear, shallow, flowing streams, riffles and springs. Tank size: Minimum 90 x 30cm footprint to see a shoal of six or more at their best. Water requirements: Don’t drift too far below neutral: 6.5 to 7.5ph, hardness 6–24°H. Temperature: bloodworm (they love it), Daphnia, Cyclops, Mysis, Krill, Calanus, chopped prawn, and frozen blends with high carotenoid levels. Availability and price: Quite common if you take the time to look closely in coldwater sections. Prices start at around £6.50 for juveniles, though good, colourful fish might be £7.50 or (much) more each.
