Sci­en­tific name: Notropis chro­so­mus (No-trop-iss crow-so-muss). Size: To around 8cm fully grown, usu­ally 5-6cm in tanks. Ori­gin: North Amer­ica, in the states of Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee. Habi­tat: Clear, shal­low, flow­ing streams, rif­fles and springs. Tank size: Min­i­mum 90 x 30cm foot­print to see a shoal of six or more at their best. Wa­ter re­quire­ments: Don’t drift too far be­low neu­tral: 6.5 to 7.5ph, hard­ness 6–24°H. Tem­per­a­ture: blood­worm (they love it), Daph­nia, Cy­clops, My­sis, Krill, Calanus, chopped prawn, and frozen blends with high carotenoid lev­els. Avail­abil­ity and price: Quite com­mon if you take the time to look closely in cold­wa­ter sec­tions. Prices start at around £6.50 for ju­ve­niles, though good, colour­ful fish might be £7.50 or (much) more each.
