What is a shiner?

Practical Fishkeeping (UK) - - Fish Of The Month -

Technically, it’s a minnow, in the true sense and not the colloquial one. The shiners of the genus Notropis (sometimes misspelt as ‘Notropsis’) are numerous — there are 88 known species, and possibly more, pending which ichthyologists you follow.

True minnows are Cyprininds, and in the subfamily of Leucisinae, where Notropis lives, there are many familiar names: Bream, Bleak, Chub, Dace, Ide, Roach, Rudd and Tench are all members of the same, large club.
