Sci­en­tific name: Distichodus affi­nis (Diss-tick-oh-duss aff-in-iss). Size: To 20cm. Ori­gin: Demo­cratic Repub­lic of Congo. Habi­tat: Mul­ti­ple, of­ten in rivers with sandy bases, leaf lit­ter, de­bris and veg­e­ta­tion. Tank size: Min­i­mum 120 x 30cm foot­print. Wa­ter re­quire­ments: Easy go­ing be­tween acid and al­ka­line: 6.0 to 8.0ph, hard­ness 4–20°H. Tem­per­a­ture: 23 to 28°C. Tem­per­a­ment: Pretty aloof, might have a rare nip at a long fin out of cu­rios­ity.

Feed­ing: Om­ni­vore, but get plenty of green in the diet. Cu­cum­ber, cour­gette, flaked pea and spinach pe­ri­od­i­cally will help. Also eats Daph­nia, blood­worm and most dried flake and pel­let foods. Avail­abil­ity and price: D.affi­nis are com­mon now, even farmed, but this gold vari­ant will be a rare wild im­port.
