FACTFILE DWARF CHAIN LOACH
Scientific name: Ambastaia sidthimunki Pronunciation: Am-bah-stay-ah sid-thi-monkey Size: 6cm Origin: Western Thailand and over the border into Myanmar Habitat: Rocky, clearwater streams and headwaters over rocks, wood and leaf litter Tank size: 80x30x30cm for five fish Water requirements: 6.0-7.8 ph, 2-13°H Temperature: 21-29°C Temperament: Active, playful and peaceful Feeding: Sinking pellets, wafers, and algae wafers, frozen and livefoods Availability and cost: Common; £9-£17 An honourable mention is deserved for the Dwarf chain loach, Ambastaia sidthimunki, which was once included in the Botia family. This fish and Ambastaia nigrolineata are the smallest of this type of loach and A. sidthimunki is just as peaceful as its slightly larger cousins, so it’s a good choice for aquaria.
The downside is the price. Often found at around £16, it makes for a dear shoal of five, but honestly, it’s well worth it. These fish are still playful, but maybe not quite as active during the day as several of the other species mentioned.
