Be­cause Flowerhorns are bred for their de­sir­able traits, sub­stan­dard and ster­ile fish – of which there are many per spawn – are of­ten dis­carded, and that all too of­ten means into Asian wa­ter­ways. Once re­leased, they are ag­gres­sive and rav­en­ous. Stom­ach con­tent analy­ses of feral fish from Asian lakes re­veal vast amounts of mol­luscs, fish and fish eggs, caus­ing eco­log­i­cal pres­sure on na­tive species.
