Fed up spending hours editing your photographs? Dan Mold explains why Actions are the way to go.

Practical Photography (UK) - - Welcome -

Apply loads of new special effects with our biggest ever presets giveaway.

ACTIONS ARE A brilliant way of saving time in Photoshop. In a nutshell, they are pre-recorded edits that can be replayed on any image you choose at the push of a button. Working with them is a great way to reduce editing time – which means less time spent in front of your computer and more time spent outside with your camera!

This month we’ve bundled together no fewer than 101 free Actions for you to enjoy, all of which have been designed to let you make rapid edits. From adjusting the brightness of your picture to adding contrast, and increasing sharpness to applying retro filter effects, you’ll find all of these quick edits and more waiting for you in the Free Gifts folder on your disc. Just load up one of the sets that you like the sound of, then follow the step-by-step below to start using them. With five sets to choose from – Black & White Effects, Landscape Effects, Quick Fixes, Retro Styles and Sharpening – you’re bound to find something to suit you.

You’ll easily get the hang of using them once you’ve applied a few different styles. You can even stack them for a custom effect – to increase contrast and add a vignette, simply use the ‘Quick Fix - Medium Contrast’ and ‘Quick Fix - Add Vignette’ Actions one after the other.

Got a version of Photoshop or Elements? Then just open up the image you want to work up and let’s get stuck in.
