How to capture a variation in tonality

Practical Photography (UK) - - Mono Masterclass -

The most crucial element to a successful black & white landscape is a contrast in the tonality within a scene. This can be achieved through finding a landscape that naturally contains a separation of dark and light tones, such as the pale trees in this dark woodland scene (left), or shooting under lighting conditions that produce areas of deep shadows and clear highlights.
