Re-run your road trip
ON 6 MAY this year it will be 29 years to the day that my Yamaha RD50MX was delivered to my door. I had never ridden on the road before and I was 16 that day. My best mate Rob who taught me to ride a bike was with me and we decided to embark on an epic journey. So I got on my new RD. I could hardly ride it and we set off from Wellesbourne in Warwickshire to Cheltenham in Gloucestershire, a round trip of 75 miles (my god is that all).
It was a massive adventure that resulted in near-death experiences, mechanical failure, and neither of us have ever forgotten a second of it.
For the past two years I have sourced, purchased and restored a 1981 RD50MX and a 1979 DT50M. They are as close to exact replicas as I could make them of the bikes we used that day – same colours, some of the same mods. It’s been very difficult. They are rare.
So in a couple of weeks’ time we are going to do it again. No phones. No back up. Same trip. Everyone who has heard about this has lived the story. We thought you might like to know about it. Anthony Bartle and Robert Web, email
