Fazer not underrated

Practical Sportsbikes (UK) - - Letters -

In your Top 10 Underrated Bikes feature (PS, July, 2017), you said that no one who ever rode a first generation Fazer can say it’s not a magical blend of power, handling and braking. Well, sorry, I’m the one.

I was looking for a cheap, yet powerful, trackday bike. A friend of mine told me he wanted to sell his 1999 600 Fazer. I took a test ride, and I was not impressed by the motor. But I’ll admit the brakes were great (which for a slow rider like me is important). So, I bought it. As soon as I got home, I started to turn the bike into a trackday bike. And everytime I was going in the garage, I would look at the bike and say to myself “Why did you buy this?”.

The weeks became months. and then, something happened. I got invited to the Le Mans 24-hour, in a team that ran an RC30. All the guys in the team either had an RC30 or an NC30.

On the Monday following the race, the Fazer was on sale, and three weeks later, I was buying an NC30 near Snetterton. At least, someone liked the bike. I’d rather push my bike than ride a Fazer.

It’s not really a trackday bike though, is it Tom? – JM
