WHAT’S THE PROBLEM?
Wiring up VFR750 headlights, fixing duff Ducati indicators
I have a 1996 Honda VFR750FT which is a parallel import – remember them? It’s a Euro-spec bike which was registered in the UK when new.
I want to convert it to UK spec. I have the mph speedo and sensor which I think is all I need to sort this out.
It also has a Euro-spec headlight which illuminates only one of the twin beams on dip. It also dips the wrong way.
I have the Uk-spec headlight/ reflector so I can sort the direction of the dipped beam but I want to wire it so both beams illuminate on dip, as per my old Uk-spec. bike. It seems like it should be simple but as they say ‘on the eighth day the Devil invented motorcycle electrics’ I want to be sure – do I need to use a relay? Matt Jaques, West Yorkshire
Ferret says: You will need to use another relay if there isn’t one already; one identical to that currently used for the high beam circuit would be the ideal choice.
At present the dipped beam is fed directly through the switch. You will also need the relevant four-pin connector and new terminals for the new relay. Also on your shopping list should be some more blackand-red wire to solder to and extend the existing black-andred which is the power supply from the headlamp fuse to the relay, some green wire to make an earth for the currently unused low-beam filament and two lengths of white wire to feed the low beam filaments from the relay.
Next, disconnect the white wire from the present single low beam bulb and reconnect it to the new low beam headlamp relay. Done.
