1978 Moto Guzzi Spada Cafe Racer
Owner: Clive Roberts, Sandhurst, Berkshire Owned for: 11 months
What’s the story? I found this Spada on ebay after a three year search for a late ’70s Guzzi, suitable for a cafe racer project. A lot of work was already done by the previous owner before the project stalled 20 years ago. It has a Raceco modified engine, lightened crank, twin spark head, sump extension and internal work, but it’s never run since being modified. Up front it’s got GSX-R1100 upside down forks. Fuel tank is an aluminium CB1100R item adapted for the frame. The wheels are California 1100 spoked hubs onto what were new Akront rims.
Progress so far? Having been stored in a damp shed for 20 years everything needs refurbishment, including what were new parts. The design is nearly complete – I’ve spent a lot of time sourcing parts and mocking up the design. Now I need just a few more big ticket items: Zard exhaust, Öhlins shocks.
What’s next? Now I’ve nailed the look and spec, the really hard work starts. I’m working on the seat at the moment and reckon I’m probably two years away from hearing it fire up. I think it’ll be worth it.
